Effective treatment for gum disease in Calgary area patients

Your teeth aren’t there simply for aesthetics; they perform very important and vital functions. Your teeth are the first component of the digestion process, allowing you to bite and chew food properly. They also play a major role in being able to speak clearly. Teeth are held in place by their root, which extends deep through the gum tissue into the jawbone.

Taking proper care of your teeth is vital to keeping them long term. When oral hygiene is neglected, plaque is given the environment it needs to grow and feed bacteria. As the bacteria are left to thrive in they begin to produce an enzyme which attacks the teeth and gums, leading to decay. At this point, gum tissue may begin to swell and bleed when you brush. Gums can be tender to the touch and your breath may begin to emit a foul odor. At this point, you have now developed the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis.

Treatment for gingivitis is straightforward. At this point, the effects of the disease can be reversed with the help of a professional deep cleaning, frequent dental visits and proper at home oral care.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Symptoms of periodontitis are irreversible. During this stage, the gums begin to separate from the teeth, leaving pockets that are then susceptible to bacteria. Once bacteria invade the pockets, it can destroy the bone surrounding the root. Eventually, the gum line recedes enough for teeth to become loose and fall out.

Treatment for periodontitis involves a process called scaling and root planing. In addition, patients may require bone grafts and dental implants or other restorations to replace the structure and teeth lost to gum disease.

The main cause of gum disease is lack of proper oral health care. By visiting the dentist regularly and taking proper care of your teeth at home, you can greatly minimize your risk of developing gum disease. Regular dental visits allow the teeth to be professionally cleaned and also allow the dentist to detect any signs of gum disease early, which it is still reversible.

If you are exhibiting any of the signs or symptoms of gum disease, it is important to call us as soon as possible to begin treatment.
